I want to share a little something that’s helped me a lot lately: a decision-making checklist for decluttering. If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably looked around your home more than once and thought,

Where do I even start?

At 67, I’ve had my fair share of “stuff” come and go. Some things are sentimental, some practical, and—if I’m being honest—some are just taking up space. So, I created a simple guide that walks you through how to decide whether to sell, donate, or toss the items you’re sorting through. And yes—there’s even a free printable for you at the bottom!

Start Here: The Declutter Decision Checklist

Ask yourself these questions as you go through your things:

Is it broken, stained, or expired?
→ If yes, throw it away.

Do I use it, wear it, or love it?
→ If no, consider donating or selling.
→ If yes, keep it!

Is it valuable or in demand?
→ If yes, sell it.
→ If no, donate it.

Do I have duplicates?
→ Keep the best one, and donate or toss the rest.

Would I pack this if I were moving?
→ If no, let it go.

Does it fit my current lifestyle or season of life?
→ If not, donate it.

Is it sentimental but bulky or unused?
→ Take a photo of it, then donate it. Keep only a few special items.

Sell vs. Donate – How to Decide

Sell it if:

  • It has resale value (electronics, designer items, collectibles).
  • It’s in excellent or like-new condition.
  • You’re willing to list it, meet buyers, or ship it.
  • You enjoy garage sales or online selling (like eBay, Facebook Marketplace, or Poshmark).
  • The money you’ll earn feels worth your time and effort.

  • It’s in good condition but low resale value (books, everyday clothes, basic kitchenware).
  • You want to declutter quickly.
  • You don’t have the time, energy, or interest in selling.
  • You’d rather bless someone else than make a few extra dollars.
  • It’s been sitting in your “sell pile” for more than three weeks and hasn’t sold.

Bonus Tip: The Three-Week Rule

If you’ve tried to sell something for three weeks and it hasn’t moved—go ahead and donate it. Keep that decluttering momentum going!

I hope this post and the printable help make your decluttering journey a little easier and more intentional. I know how overwhelming it can feel—especially in this season of life—but small steps really do add up. ❤️
