If you’ve ever felt ashamed or judged for your anxiety as a Christian, you’re not alone.

Too many believers have been told that if they just had more faith, or trusted God more, their anxiety would go away. But the truth is far more layered—and far more compassionate.

Anxiety is real. And it is not a spiritual failure.

Let’s Clear Something Up

Some anxiety can stem from trying to control what only God can.
But much of it stems from past experiences—trauma, stress, grief, or fear—that our bodies and minds haven’t had space to heal from.

In fact, sometimes anxiety is a form of PTSD. And sometimes, it’s a signal that our nervous system is stuck in survival mode. That doesn’t mean we don’t love God or trust Him—it means we are human and we’ve been through something hard.

A Confession From Me

I want to pause and share something personal. The stigma and shame that surrounds anxiety and panic attacks—especially within Christian circles—is one of my biggest pet peeves.

And I say that as someone who used to get this all wrong.

I used to believe people could just “change their thinking” or “pray harder” to make the anxiety go away. I thought if they had stronger faith, the fear would disappear. But I was wrong.

God allowed me to walk through my own seasons of anxiety, and let me tell you—experiencing a full-blown panic attack changed everything. It was crippling. And it was humbling. It opened my eyes to the reality that anxiety isn’t always about weak faith—it’s often about a brain and body that are hurting and overwhelmed.

That experience gave me compassion I didn’t know I needed. And I will never again minimize what someone else is going through just because I don’t fully understand it.

God Made Our Brains, Too

There is absolutely nothing wrong with getting help from a therapist or medical professional. God gave people wisdom to understand how the brain works—He created it, after all!

Many of our thought patterns, chemical imbalances, and trauma responses are rooted in how our brain’s pathways have been formed over time. Sometimes prayer and Scripture help us renew our minds. Sometimes therapy helps us understand our wounds so we can begin to heal. And often, it’s both.

Faith and Fear Can Coexist

One of my favorite verses comes from Psalm 56:3:

“When I am afraid, I put my trust in You.”

Notice it says when, not if.
Fear shows up in this life. Anxiety comes. But trusting God doesn’t mean fear disappears—it means we choose to lean into Him even while the fear is still present.

Pastor and author Chip Ingram takes us to God’s Word, helping us shift away from self-centered happiness and toward lasting joy found in God’s goodness.

You Are Not Failing

If you’re in a season of anxiety, please hear this from my heart:
You are not broken.
You are not faithless.
You are not alone.

God is with you in the middle of it—not waiting for you on the other side. He’s not ashamed of you. He understands. And He walks with you toward healing, one step at a time.

Final Thoughts

Anxiety isn’t a faith issue—it’s a human issue. And there’s grace for that.

Let’s be people who extend compassion instead of condemnation. Let’s be a Church that holds space for healing instead of handing out shame.
