Setting Safe Boundaries Is Okay

As the proud grandma of an adorable 20-month-old, I’m getting a daily reminder of just how important boundaries really are. That little guy is constantly testing limits. And you know what? He’s smart — he already knows exactly how to get his mommy’s attention. But the biggest reason he needs those boundaries is simple: safety.

Boundaries aren’t punishments; they’re protection. Just like baby gates and locked cabinets keep toddlers safe from harm, personal boundaries help keep us safe — emotionally, mentally, and even spiritually.

Barricade with Words: Safety in Boundaries

I’ll admit it: learning how to set boundaries didn’t come easy for me. But over time, I’ve come to see them for what they are — not barriers, but safeguards. Boundaries are not about keeping people out; they’re about protecting the space we need to thrive. They’re proactive, not reactive. When we put them in place early, we create a zone of peace that others are simply not allowed to violate.

Safe boundaries aren’t selfish. They’re sacred.

A Book Worth Reading

One of the best resources I’ve found on this topic is “Good Boundaries and Goodbyes: Loving Others Without Losing the Best of Who You Are” by Lysa TerKeurst. In it, she powerfully reminds us that boundaries aren’t just wise — they’re biblical. They honor both ourselves and the people we love.

Boundaries at Work — and at Home

In the workplace, we’re taught to steer clear of certain topics like politics, religion, and sex — not because they’re inherently bad, but because they often lead to heated debates and hurt feelings. It’s an unspoken code that helps keep the peace.

Why not apply that same wisdom to our personal lives?

Think about it: who can you talk about politics with? Religion? Sex? There are some people who just aren’t safe for those conversations — and that’s okay! Setting boundaries in those areas helps prevent unnecessary conflict and keeps relationships healthier.

My Boundaries Might Look Different Than Yours

I’ve realized that boundaries aren’t one-size-fits-all. I have close friends I can talk to about anything — even the most personal topics. And then there are others (like my mom!) where, let’s be honest, some subjects are just off-limits. And that’s totally fine. I’m sure she feels the same way. 😅

By taking the time to reflect on my boundaries and communicate them clearly, I avoid drama, reduce stress, and keep myself emotionally safe. And really, isn’t that something we all need a little more of?
