We all have moments when we feel unseen, unworthy, or like our past is too messy for God to use. But one of my favorite stories in the Bible reminds me that no one is ever too far gone.
In John chapter 4, Jesus meets a woman at a well in Samaria. Most Jewish people avoided Samaria, but Jesus didn’t. He went right through it because He had a divine appointment waiting there.
This woman came to the well in the middle of the day, probably trying to avoid people and their judgmental stares.
She had made mistakes, been through multiple marriages, and was now living with a man who wasn’t her husband. In her culture, that meant shame and isolation.
But Jesus didn’t look away. He didn’t condemn her. He spoke to her with compassion. He told her that He could give her living water—something that would satisfy her soul in a way nothing else ever could.
As they talked, Jesus gently revealed that He knew everything about her. Her story. Her shame. Her hurt. Yet He offered her grace instead of judgment.
And here’s what I love most: the woman didn’t stay stuck in her shame. She ran back to town and told everyone, “Come and see a man who told me everything I ever did!”
The woman who had once avoided people now boldly shared her story. Her encounter with Jesus turned her pain into purpose. She became one of the first messengers of the Gospel—proof that God can use anyone, no matter their past.
That’s the beauty of redemption. Jesus meets us where we are, not where we think we should be. He takes our broken pieces and makes something beautiful out of them.
So, if you’re carrying regret or shame today, remember the woman at the well. She didn’t have to fix her life before coming to Jesus. She simply came as she was, and that was enough.
Jesus is still meeting people at the well. Maybe today, He’s meeting you there too.
