How I Seek His Guidance One Step at a Time
“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you.” – Matthew 7:7 (NIV)
Have you ever found yourself stuck in that in-between place—wanting so badly to make the right decision, but unsure of what God wants you to do? I’ve been there more times than I can count. But through all the uncertainty, one thing I know for sure: God does speak. He does lead. And He wants to guide us—even more than we want to be guided.
Over the years, I’ve learned a few practical and spiritual steps that help me tune in and hear Him more clearly. Maybe they’ll help you too.
1. Start With a Clean Heart
When I’m seeking guidance, the first thing I do is ask God to search my heart and reveal anything that might be blocking my connection with Him.
I often pray the words of Psalm 139:23-24:
“Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”
Isn’t that a beautiful prayer of surrender? Psalm 66:18 reminds us that holding on to sin can interfere with hearing from God—but 1 John 1:9 brings hope: If we confess, He is faithful to forgive.
There’s peace in coming to Him open, honest, and ready to listen.
2. Surrender the Outcome
This one is tender for me. So many times I’ve gone to the Lord with my heart already set on the answer I wanted. But God gently reminds me—His plans are always better.
1 John 5:14-15 says He hears us when we pray according to His will. Not mine. So now, when I pray, I try to start with surrender. “Whatever You say, Lord—I’ll trust You with the results.” There’s so much peace in that kind of release.
3. Sit in the Word
God speaks through Scripture. Every time I open His Word with an expectant heart, I find something I needed—whether it’s comfort, conviction, or clear direction.
Sometimes it’s a verse I’ve read a dozen times. Other days it’s a passage I’ve never noticed before. But when I approach the Bible saying, “Lord, speak to me,” He always does.
Mark 11:24 reminds us: “Whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.” So I’ve learned to open the Bible believing He will lead me—right there on the page.
4. Be Willing to Wait
I’ll be honest—this one isn’t easy. I like answers. I like movement. But some of the sweetest growth in my life has happened during the waiting.
Isaiah 64:4 says, “God acts on behalf of those who wait for Him.” That’s not passive—it’s active faith. So if you’re in a season of waiting, you’re not forgotten. You’re being formed.
A Closing Word of Encouragement
Friend, God sees you. He knows the decision you’re trying to make. He’s not distant or silent—He’s drawing you closer. And the closer we get to Him, the more clearly we hear His voice.
So today, I invite you to do what I’m doing:
🤍 Clean the slate.
🤍 Lay it all down.
🤍 Open His Word.
🤍 And wait with a heart full of trust.
He will speak. That’s a promise.
