Have you ever said something and instantly wished you could take it back? I have—more times than I care to admit. Whether it’s a harsh word said in frustration or a joke that wasn’t so kind, our words carry weight. They can build someone up… or tear someone down in a heartbeat.
“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up… that it may benefit those who listen.” – Ephesians 4:29 (NIV)
And honestly? That takes practice. It takes pausing, praying, and sometimes biting our tongue when we’d rather let loose. But when we do, we become vessels of grace in a world that deeply needs it.
💡 Here are three gentle ways to apply this in everyday life:
-
Pause before you speak. Ask: Will this build up or break down?
-
Speak to the need. Encourage others in a way that speaks to where they are emotionally or spiritually.
-
Let kindness be your language. Whether it’s to your spouse, a stranger, or someone online—gracious words have lasting power.
Lately, I’m learning the power of pausing before I speak. Instead of blurting out what I want to say, I’m learning to rephrase it in a way that’s kinder, softer, and more thoughtful.
Funny enough, this little lesson came from watching my daughter gently guide her son during a teaching moment. She got her point across—firm but full of grace. No anger, no judgment, no harsh tone. Just love and clarity.
What a beautiful thing it is to learn from our children. 🙌
A humbling and sweet reminder that the way we say something often matters just as much as what we say. 💬✨
A Closing Prayer:
Lord, help me to speak with wisdom, kindness, and love. Let my words reflect Your heart and build up those who hear them. Teach me to use my voice for encouragement, never harm. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
