There’s a quiet ache I’ve noticed more and more in these senior years—one I never quite expected. It’s not physical, though that comes and goes. It’s emotional. It’s spiritual. It’s the feeling of slowly becoming invisible.

And I know I’m not alone.

A prayer when you feel invisible

Life Lived, But Not Always Seen

I’ve lived a full life. Raised children, kept a home, wiped tears, celebrated victories, and weathered storms. My life has been a patchwork of prayer, perseverance, and joy. And yet, there are days now where I feel like none of that matters anymore.

My family is busy—I get that. Life pulls us all in different directions. Not all of my kids have drifted; two of them still reach out, and I treasure those moments deeply. But the silence from others, especially my grandkids, can be deafening. I find myself wishing for a random visit, a quick text, a “Love you, Oma” that arrives out of the blue. Just something small to light up my day.

Sometimes it feels like I’m disappearing—like that scene in Back to the Future, when Marty McFly begins to fade from a family photo. That image lingers in my mind. I feel present, alive, full of thoughts and feelings… but slowly fading from the frame of their everyday lives.

Still Here, Still Valuable

I don’t feel as old as they might think I am. My heart is still curious, still filled with love and ideas and hope. I carry wisdom—not because I’ve read it in books, but because I’ve lived it. I’ve learned through laughter, heartbreak, faith, and resilience.

And yet, it hurts to feel dismissed. To have the things I say brushed aside or overlooked. There’s an ache that settles in when your voice isn’t heard, when your wisdom isn’t wanted, when your presence feels optional.

But here’s what I remind myself—over and over again:

I am not invisible. I am not forgotten. I am not unimportant.

God sees me. He knows every strand of silver in my hair and every scar on my heart. He calls me by name. He walks beside me. In His eyes, I am just as loved, just as valuable, just as full of purpose as I have ever been.

These years are not a slow fade—they are a sacred unfolding. And maybe, just maybe, I still have something to offer, even when it goes unnoticed. I can still be a light, a voice of encouragement, a safe place.
