Have you ever heard of the 5 Second Rule

by Mel Robbins?

I just recently came across this idea, and while I haven’t tried it myself (yet!), I found it so simple and interesting that I wanted to share it with you—especially if you sometimes struggle with procrastination or hesitation like I do.

Here’s the basic concept:

What Is the 5 Second Rule?

The 5 Second Rule is a tool to help you stop overthinking and take action.

When you have the instinct to do something you know you should do—something that aligns with your goals or values—you simply count down:

5… 4… 3… 2… 1… GO.

Then you move. You physically take the first step before your brain has time to talk you out of it.

That’s it!

It could be getting out of bed, picking up your walking shoes, making a phone call you’ve been putting off, or even starting a project you’ve been avoiding. The idea is to interrupt the habit of hesitation and do the thing—before fear, doubt, or distractions creep in.

📘 Book Spotlight: The 5 Second Rule by Mel Robbins

If you’ve ever struggled with procrastination, self-doubt, or just getting started, this book offers a powerful yet simple solution. In The 5 Second Rule, Mel Robbins shares how counting backward—5-4-3-2-1, Go!—can help you break the cycle of hesitation and take immediate action toward your goals.

It’s not about motivation; it’s about momentum. This rule activates your brain’s decision-making center and helps you move before fear or excuses take over.

Whether you’re trying to declutter a room, speak up, start a new habit, or stop overthinking, this book offers practical tools to help you move forward—five seconds at a time.

“You are one decision away from a completely different life.” – Mel Robbins

Why It Works

Mel Robbins explains that when we hesitate, even for a few seconds, our brain tends to kick into protection mode. It starts coming up with all the reasons why we shouldn’t act—why now isn’t the right time, why we’re too tired, or why we’ll do it later.

Counting down from five creates a tiny window where we override that mental chatter and activate the part of the brain that’s responsible for decision-making. It helps us take intentional action instead of operating on autopilot.

A Tool for Intentional Living

I love this idea because it aligns so beautifully with the kind of intentional living many of us are striving for in this season of life.

We want to spend our time wisely. We want to make room for peace, purpose, and things that matter. And sometimes, all it takes is one small, brave moment to begin.

Would You Try It?

I’m curious to see how this rule might help me stop overthinking and start doing—especially in those everyday moments when I just need a little push.
