If you have been following me at all lately, I have been watching a lot of things regarding minimalism. Becoming frugal is a byproduct of minimalism. With that comes a sense of being a good steward of our money. Or should I say His money?
I received a small inheritance lately. Because of that gift, I prayed about how I wanted to spend the money. I knew it was important to the person that I would receive something. I also know that they loved my home. I decided to use the money to make upgrades to my home. If that loved one was here today, I know that they would be delighted with how I spent the money.
I had decisions to make. I had to make a distinction between a want and a need. Here is an example:
This is my main bathroom. I had a contractor come over to give me an estimate on a new tub surround, new paint, a new ceiling, and a floating floor. I don’t LOVE this bathroom the way it looks now.
Here is the monstrous front window of my house. It is very drafty because all the windows are single pane. I get frost on the inside of the windows in the wintertime. The paint constantly needs repair and fresh paint.
You know where I am going with this. The bathroom doesn’t NEED to be remodeled. I WANT a spruced-up bathroom.
The front window NEEDS to be replaced. Although I might never retrieve the money, I spend on its replacement through my heating bills or even whenever we sell the house, it truly needs to be replaced.
Do you need to choose between a want and a need? Are you willing to be honest with yourself? Being a good steward of your money (God’s money) and even your inherited money will surely bless you! Being frugal feels good, but we don’t want to become obsessed with it. There is a balance.
