The Perks: Why I Love Being Married to a Younger Man
1. He Keeps Me Young
Let’s be honest, energy levels don’t stay the same as we get older. But being with someone younger means I’m constantly inspired to get out, try new things, and stay active. Whether it’s taking long walks with the dogs, going on spontaneous weekend adventures, or just keeping up with his pace around the house—he motivates me to move. I may grumble sometimes, but deep down I know it’s good for me
2. Financial Benefits (Yes, Really!)
One unexpected blessing? I’m covered under his health insurance. That means I haven’t had to sign up for Medicare Part B yet or pay extra for dental or prescription plans. That’s a big savings and peace of mind, especially in retirement when every dollar starts to count. It’s not exactly romantic, but it’s definitely practical! Also, he is still earning an income. We are not living on a fixed income, yet!
3. A Different Perspective on Life
Being married to someone from a slightly younger generation means he sees the world a little differently. It’s refreshing. He challenges me to think in new ways and keeps me from getting stuck in the “this is how we’ve always done it” mindset. That kind of growth is something I treasure.
1. Energy Gaps Are Real
As much as I love his energy, there are days when I just can’t keep up. He forgets sometimes that I’m six years older—and while that’s flattering, it’s also frustrating. My stamina and physical abilities aren’t what they used to be, and I’ve had to gently remind him that I need to pace myself. We’re learning to find a middle ground.
2. Retirement Isn’t Quite What I Imagined
I’m retired. He’s not. And that changes things. I imagined retirement as a slower, more relaxed season, but with a working spouse, I still feel like I’m half in the fast lane. I try to wait for him to be off work to do certain things, which means my schedule isn’t as free as I thought it would be. It’s not a dealbreaker, but it definitely shifts the rhythm I thought retirement would have.
3. Different Life Stages Can Be Tricky
While six years may not sound like much, there are moments when we’re just in different headspaces. I’m thinking about simplifying and downsizing, while he’s still kind of exploring. I’m more focused on slowing down, and he’s still revving up for the next chapter. It takes communication and a lot of grace.
Would I Do It Again? Absolutely.
At the end of the day, love doesn’t follow a rulebook—or a birth year. We laugh, we learn, we love deeply, and we grow together. Sure, there are days when our age difference shows up more than others, but I wouldn’t trade this life for anything.
