Let’s chat about something that most of us have lurking in a drawer (or three)… cords! You know, those tangled messes of wires we hang onto “just in case.” Well, if you’re anything like me, you’d rather live in a wireless world—but still somehow end up with a bin full of mystery cords from the past decade.
Recently, my husband and I tackled the Great Cord Decluttering Project, and I’m here to share how we did it and how you can too.
Why We Hang On to Cords
Let’s be honest—most of us are afraid to toss cords because we think we might need them later. But with technology changing so fast, many of those old cords just aren’t useful anymore. Think about your old phones—do you really still need five different charging cords for a device you don’t even use?
Step 1: Gather Every Cord
Start by collecting every cord in your house. Look in drawers, under beds, in office nooks—anywhere a cord might be hiding. I piled ours all on the dining room table (yep, it was a sight!) and called in my husband for backup. Let’s face it: he knows his HDMI from his lightning cables better than I do!
If you have kids or tech-savvy family members, get them involved too. It can be a fun little family project—especially on a rainy day.
The Cord Labels I Used
It is so helpful to label your cords especially if you are not that tech savvy! Buy them here.
Step 2: Sort and Declutter
Once you’ve got them all together, sort them by type—USBs, HDMI, phone chargers, laptop cords, etc. From there, start asking the tough questions:
- Do we even own the device this goes to?
- Do we need five of the same kind?
- Is this cord for something that’s now obsolete?
- You might be surprised how many you can confidently let go of!

Step 4: Give Them a Home
The key to staying organized? Everything needs a home. Create one spot in your house where all your cords live. That way, when they start showing up in random drawers again, you’ll know exactly where to put them—and find them when you need one.
Final Thoughts
Getting your cords under control might not sound glamorous, but it’s surprisingly satisfying. It’s a great rainy day task (like it was for us here in chilly Pennsylvania!), and your future self will thank you the next time you’re hunting for the right charger.
If this little tip helped you, feel free to share it with a friend, and don’t forget to subscribe to Oma’s Musings YouTube channel for more simple ways to declutter, simplify, and live with more peace and purpose.
Until next time—take care, and God bless you! 💛
