I’ll be honest. I love saving money. I always have. And recently, my husband mentioned that we seem to be spending a lot on groceries. He wasn’t wrong. When I really stopped to think about it, I realized part of that is because I’ve been trying new recipes and making pantry‑stable mixes. That has been fun and useful, but it also meant buying extra ingredients upfront.

So instead of feeling guilty or defensive about it, I decided to get curious.

Giving a Pantry Challenge A Try

What This Pantry Challenge Is for Me

This pantry challenge isn’t about deprivation or eating strange meals just to prove a point. It’s simply a way to pause, take stock of what we already have, and see how long we can go without doing big grocery runs.

For us, that means: – Using what’s already in the pantry, fridge, and freezer – Being more intentional with meal planning – Only buying true basics if needed

That’s it. Nothing extreme.

Why I Want to Try It

There are a few reasons I want to see how this works.

  • I’m genuinely curious how much money we could save if we slowed down our grocery shopping for a bit.
  • I want to use up what we already have. I know there are cans, boxes, and freezer items tucked away that were bought with good intentions.
  • I actually enjoy a challenge. Not the stressful kind, but the kind that makes you more mindful and creative.
  • I want to be able to share my experience with my followers.

A Gentle Approach

At this stage of life, I’m not interested in anything that feels punishing. This is meant to be practical and peaceful. If we need fresh produce or a few essentials, that’s fine. The goal is awareness, not perfection.

I see this as a short experiment, not a rulebook. I want to learn from it, not feel boxed in by it.

What I’m Hoping to Learn

By the end of this pantry challenge, I’m hoping to:

  • Get a clearer picture of our grocery spending
  • See how long what we have really lasts
  • Be more intentional moving forward

Even if we only save a little, I think the insight alone will be worth it.

So that’s where I’m at. I’m giving this pantry challenge a try, with an open mind and no pressure.

If you’ve ever wondered the same thing, maybe this is your nudge to give it a try too. Get the family involved, too!
