You’ve probably heard the phrase:
“God won’t give you more than you can handle.”
It sounds comforting at first. But let’s be honest—it’s not always true.
Sometimes life does give us more than we can bear.
The loss, the grief, the sickness, the broken relationships…
They knock the wind out of us.
So where did this phrase come from, and what does the Bible really say?
Let’s Look at Scripture
Many people are actually thinking of 1 Corinthians 10:13, which says:
“No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.”
This verse is about temptation, not suffering.
God promises that when we’re tempted to sin, He will always make a way of escape. We’re never trapped in sin with no choice.
But when it comes to the pain and pressure of life—sometimes it is too much for us.
Paul, one of the strongest and most faithful people in the New Testament, wrote this in 2 Corinthians 1:8–9:
“We were under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired of life itself… But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God, who raises the dead.”
Did you catch that?
Even Paul said, “This was more than I could handle.”
And yet—it pushed him to do the very thing God longs for us to do:
Rely fully on Him.
The Real Truth
God never promised that life would be easy.
He never said we’d avoid heartache or that we’d always feel strong.
But He did promise this:
- His presence.
- His strength.
- His faithfulness.
So no, life may not be something you can handle on your own.
But with God?
- You are never alone in the fire.
- You are never without a way forward.
- And you are never without hope.
Final Thoughts
The next time you feel like you can’t take one more thing…
You might be exactly where God wants you—
Not because He’s punishing you,
But because He’s drawing you to the place where you’ll rely on His strength instead of your own.
Life might be more than you can handle.
But it’s never more than God can.
