I truly believe God created me for homemaking, and in this season that calling has come alive in a new way.
In my senior years, I’ve found myself drawn to something I never expected. Homesteading.
Homesteading is a simple way of living where you learn to do more for yourself at home instead of relying on stores for everything. It is what I like to call getting back to basics, cooking from scratch, making pantry staples, using what I have, wasting less, slowing down, being intentional, and caring for my home and my husband in practical ways. Modern homesteading can happen anywhere. It is less about where you live and more about choosing a simpler way of living and using what God has already provided.
Sometimes I think about my younger years and wonder how different my life might have been if I had chosen this lifestyle instead of working outside the home. I imagine what it would have looked like to focus on homemaking and caring for my home from the start, if only I had heeded God’s direction for me. But the world got a hold of me, and that is not how my story went. It is what it is. God is patient, and in His time He has gently drawn me to the place where my heart is content.
Now I am here in this season, and I am savoring it. That is my word for the year, savor, every minute and every day.
“Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.”
Psalm 90:12
Each day God gives me the opportunity to learn how to make things from scratch, how to care for my home in new ways, and how to live simpler, and He even provides for me down to the tools I need to do these things. I do not take that lightly. I am grateful for the know how I am gaining, for the physical strength and endurance to keep going, and that my mind still loves to learn.
I also want to say how thankful I am for my husband. Over the years I have had many hobbies and ideas, and the Lord knows I do not always stick with them. Still, he has always supported me and encouraged me. He never makes me feel foolish for trying something new. He is a good provider, we get along so well, and he is even brave enough to taste my recipes, including the ones that did not turn out so great. That kind of patience and love is a gift, and I do not take it lightly.
And everyone who knows me knows this too. I am a digital girl who loves technology, loves learning from other women on YouTube, and loves using AI to help me plan, write, and organize. Old fashioned living with modern tools really is the best of both worlds.
I truly feel like I am in my element, and I am thankful for this season, every bit of it.
