I haven’t bought ice cream in quite a while, and it wasn’t some big plan or health kick. It just kind of happened once I started making my own.
I use a simple homemade ice cream recipe with sweetened condensed milk, heavy cream, and vanilla. No cooking. No ice cream maker. It’s easy, and it turns out creamy every time. Lately, I’ve been adding peanut butter, and that little addition made it even better.
I first shared this ice cream on New Year’s Day when our family got together for pork and sauerkraut. It was one of those relaxed meals where everyone is just happy to be together. I set the ice cream out, and it disappeared pretty quickly. That’s always a good sign.
My daughter even went out and bought me a couple of containers just for freezing the ice cream in. That meant a lot to me. It wasn’t about the ice cream as much as it was about sharing something homemade and simple with family.
That’s really why I stopped buying ice cream. Not because store-bought is bad or wrong, but because this has become something we actually enjoy making and keeping on hand. It’s one less thing on the grocery list, and it feels good to know exactly what’s in it.
This season of life has taught me to appreciate simple things more. A homemade dessert. A family meal. A recipe that doesn’t sit unused. These small choices don’t change everything, but they do add a little more joy to everyday life.
And truth be told, it’s just really delicious.
A Simple Encouragement
If you enjoy making things at home, even just one or two items, it can be a sweet way to slow down and savor this season. You don’t have to do everything from scratch. Just start with one thing you love.
For me, it turned out to be ice cream.
