There’s something sacred about walking through pain with God.
Not walking away from it. Not pushing it down.
But walking with it. With Him.

I’ve walked some hard paths in my life, but one of the darkest came when I had a nervous breakdown that forced me to quit my job.

It wasn’t burnout. It was beyond that.
It was like my mind and my body said, “We can’t do this anymore.”
I felt completely unraveled.

Anxiety tightened around me like a fog. Depression moved in. I felt ashamed, afraid, and broken. And even though I had faith in God, I honestly didn’t know how to pray anymore. I didn’t have words.

But the Psalms did.

The Healing Routine That Wasn’t a Routine

I didn’t set out to “recover” through a plan.
I didn’t open a devotional or map out a schedule.
I just knew I had to move my body and feed my soul.

So I laced up my sneakers, grabbed my keys, and drove to my favorite walking path.
And as I walked, I listened to the Psalms on the Bible app.

No expectations.
No pressure.
Just David’s honest cries playing through my earbuds as I took one step at a time.

When David Spoke, I Felt Understood

David didn’t hold anything back. His words were raw. Honest. Sometimes even a little unsettling.
“How long, Lord? Will You forget me forever?”
“Why have You forsaken me?”
“My soul is in deep anguish…”

And I’d think, yes, that’s exactly how I feel.
It was like someone finally put words to my chaos.

But here’s the beauty of the Psalms—
David never stayed in despair.
Somewhere in the middle of the lament, his heart would shift.

He would say something like:
“But You, O God…”

And that’s what held me.
Those three words.
But You…

Even when he felt abandoned, even when he couldn’t see the light, David remembered God’s character.
He always circled back to God’s promises.
And little by little, so did I.

What the Psalms Taught Me

  • That God can handle our honesty.
  • That faith doesn’t mean you’re never afraid.
  • That healing often starts with walking… even if it’s slow and tear-filled.
  • That Scripture isn’t just instruction—it’s comfort.

The Psalms became a companion for me in that dark valley.
And walking with them—listening while I breathed in fresh air—helped restore parts of me I thought were gone.

If You’re in That Place Right Now…

Friend, if you’re walking through your own breakdown, burnout, or season of despair, let me tell you this:

  • You are not broken beyond repair.
  • You are not alone.
  • And you don’t need the perfect words to talk to God—just a willing heart.

Take a step.
Take a breath.
Open the Psalms.
And let God meet you right where you are.

Because He will.
He always does.
Even in the mess. Especially in the mess.
