Mark 9:23 – “Everything is possible for one who believes.”
We hear it all the time.
“I know God will heal.”
“I know God will restore my marriage.”
“I know God will open that door.”
And while I understand the heart behind those words, there’s something we don’t always talk about:
Sometimes, we don’t know what God will do.
God Can… But He’s Not a Genie
Mark 9:23 is often quoted as a guarantee:
“Everything is possible for one who believes.”
But if we look at the whole story, we see something deeper.
A father comes to Jesus, desperate for his son to be healed. He says,
“If you can do anything, help us.”
Jesus replies,
“‘If you can’? Everything is possible for one who believes.”
And the father responds with one of the most honest prayers in Scripture:
“I believe; help my unbelief.”
That moment—right there—is what real faith looks like.
Not a formula. Not a promise of our preferred outcome.
But a heart willing to trust, even with shaky hands.
I’ve Lived It
When my husband was diagnosed with cancer, I prayed with all my heart.
When our daughter received her own cancer diagnosis, I wanted to believe it wasn’t so.
But I also had to come to terms with the fact that faith doesn’t mean we get to skip disappointment.
It doesn’t mean we get what we want if we believe hard enough.
God isn’t a genie.
He is our Father.
And sometimes, His answers include waiting. Or detours. Or even heartbreak.
Faith Isn’t About the Outcome
I used to feel like I had to declare victory out loud just to prove my faith.
But now I’ve learned that real faith says:
“Lord, I know You can.
But I trust You even if You don’t.
I still believe You are good.”
God doesn’t ask us to fake confidence.
He welcomes our honesty.
And He cherishes when we come to Him—not with demands—but with surrendered hearts.
Ask Boldly. Trust Fully.
So yes, ask.
Pray.
Hope.
Believe.
But then—leave it in His hands.
He may answer the way we hope.
Or He may do something entirely different.
But either way, He sees us. He loves us. And He never wastes our faith.
A Prayer for When You’re Unsure
Lord, I believe—but I’m tired and afraid.
I want to trust You, even when the outcome scares me.
Thank You for being near when my faith feels fragile.
I place this situation in Your hands.
Not because I’ve given up—but because I trust that You never will. Amen.

You don’t need perfect faith.
You just need a real faith—one that keeps showing up.
And that’s enough.
