Have you ever looked around and wondered, What on earth am I here for? I’ve had those moments too—especially in quiet seasons where things feel a bit too slow or too heavy.
But this verse from Ephesians gently reminds me of something powerful:
“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”
— Ephesians 2:10 (NIV)
Let’s take a moment to unpack this truth together. Because sweet friend, if you’re feeling a little lost or unsure of your purpose today, I want to speak life over you. You were made on purpose for a purpose.
🧶 You Are God’s Handiwork
That word handiwork comes from the Greek word poiēma. It means a work of art—a masterpiece. That means you weren’t just thrown together. You were crafted by the Creator of the universe.
Isn’t that beautiful? You’re His poem. His intentional creation. No matter your past, your age, your stage of life—you are not forgotten. You are not a mistake.
🌿 Created in Christ Jesus
When we come to know Jesus, something miraculous happens. He gives us a new identity—a clean slate. We are born again, not just patched up. And in that new life, we’re given a new purpose.
We are not defined by what we’ve done, but by what Christ has done for us.
💗 To Do Good Works
God didn’t just create us to exist—He designed us to do good. Not to earn His love, but to reflect it. Sometimes those good works look like big things… like starting a ministry or writing a book. But often? It looks like everyday faithfulness:
-
Encouraging a friend who’s struggling
-
Praying for your children and grandchildren
-
Making a meal for someone in need
-
Speaking a kind word to the grocery store clerk
None of it is wasted. Every single act of love matters to God.
🛤 Which God Prepared in Advance
Here’s what takes my breath away:
God already prepared good works for us to walk in.
Isn’t that comforting? We don’t have to strive or scramble. We just need to stay close to Him and follow His gentle nudges. He’ll show us where to go, what to say, and who to love. Even in seasons that feel quiet or unclear, He is working behind the scenes.
🪞 A Gentle Reflection
Let me ask you something, friend:
-
What’s one “good work” that might already be right in front of you?
-
What gifts has God placed in your hands that you can use today?
Maybe it’s listening. Maybe it’s writing. Maybe it’s simply showing up with a willing heart.
📖 A Few More Verses to Encourage You:
-
Philippians 1:6 – “He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion…”
-
Psalm 139:14 – “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made…”
-
Jeremiah 29:11 – “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord…”
🙏 A Prayer Over You
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for creating us with care, calling us Your masterpiece. Thank You that our lives have purpose, even when we don’t feel it. Help us walk in the good works You’ve prepared. May we reflect Your love and grace to the world around us—one kind word, one small act at a time.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
