There’s a fierce kind of love that God stitched into the heart of a mother—a love that longs to protect, to shield, to fix everything that could ever harm her child.
But what happens when that child grows up, and the battles they face are beyond our reach?
That’s the painful, holy place I find myself in today.
The Unseen Battle of Motherhood
Being a mama bear doesn’t stop just because our babies grow up.
It’s instinct—that deep, God-given drive to protect, to shield, to fix things when life gets hard. From the moment we held them in our arms, we were wired to defend them, nurture them, and guard their little hearts. But then they grow up. And they begin walking through their own valleys—illness, heartbreak, financial strain, or simply the heavy weight of life.
And we find ourselves in an unfamiliar, painful place:
We can’t swoop in and take over anymore.
And friend, that truth?
It stings.
We want to wrap them in bubble wrap. We want to march into battle for them, make the phone calls, find the solutions, and carry the weight for them. But adulthood shifts the rules. Suddenly, what once brought comfort and safety might now feel like control or interference.
And sometimes, the most loving thing we can do for our adult children…
is not to rescue them, but to release them.
A Season of Surrender
Right now, I’m personally walking through a season where I am learning to release.
It’s hard—so hard—watching my daughter face the difficult road of a cancer journey. Every part of me wants to swoop in and shield her from this.
But she’s an adult now, and even though my mama heart aches to fix it, I know deep down this is a time to trust.
Trust God to carry her.
Trust God to guide her.
Trust that His love for her is even bigger than mine.
This doesn’t mean we care less.
It means we trust more.
We trust in the growth that only hard seasons can bring.
We trust that God is at work in their story, just like He’s been at work in ours.
We trust that the same God who carried us through the mess and the miracles will carry them too—without us needing to manage it all.
The Hardest Transition
This transition—from fixer to faithful prayer warrior—is not easy. It’s one of the most difficult shifts a mother’s heart will ever experience.
But oh, there is beauty in this surrender.
It’s a holy invitation:
-
To pray more and hover less.
-
To encourage without interfering.
-
To show up with grace, not guilt.
-
To model peace and trust in the middle of the storm—not just for them, but for ourselves, too.
To every mama watching from the sidelines with a heart full of love and hands that feel too empty:
God sees you.
He sees your fierce love, your quiet prayers, and your surrendered heart.
And He’s holding both you and your child—right there in the middle of it all.
Letting go doesn’t mean giving up.
It means giving them back to the One who loves them even more than you do.
You’re not walking away—you’re walking in faith.
But what happens when that child grows up, and the battles they face are beyond our reach?
That’s the painful, holy place I find myself in today.
