While on a rainy glamping vacation last summer, I created a “just in case of emergency” document. My husband and I decided to tackle this important task during our trip.
It’s natural to avoid thinking about worst-case scenarios, such as a disaster, accident, or illness that leaves a loved one incapacitated or even worse. Unfortunately, loved ones are often tasked with cleaning out their parents’ homes and managing their affairs. Even if funeral arrangements have been made, details about insurance, finances, and debts may be unknown. It’s essential to prepare for the unexpected and ensure that important information is communicated and organized.
Many of us know someone whose spouse handles all the finances. They may not even know how to log into accounts or when bills are due. However, in the case of an emergency where the spouse is incapacitated or deceased, the surviving partner must suddenly handle everything amidst an already difficult time. That’s why it’s essential for everyone to have at least a basic understanding of financial management.
When I pass away, I want to make things as easy as possible for my children, particularly if it’s sudden. The last thing I want is for them to scramble to sort out my affairs. Additionally, I want to ensure that my pets are cared for.
In the event that they need to sell my home, or for any other urgent matter, I want to ensure that my loved ones can easily access important information such as my living will, health care directives, banking details, outstanding debts, and records of any renovations to my home that have been made.
My husband and I took the necessary step of creating our own just-in-case documents, and it’s been a great relief. To ensure that they remain relevant, I update them on a monthly basis and include a date for each revision.
