What is humility?
Below is the definition of humility in the 1828 Dictionary:
ethics, freedom from pride and arrogance; humbleness of mind; a modest estimate of one’s own worth. In theology, humility consists in lowliness of mind; a deep sense of one’s own unworthiness in the sight of God, self-abasement, penitence for sin, and submission to the divine will.

I have a booklet called Beauty in the Broken – How Humility Changes Everything by Nancy Demoss Wolgemuth. You can find it on her website at reviveourhearts.com. There is a lot of talk about humility in this little booklet. Nancy points out numerous ways that pride shows up in our lives. It shows up in our attitudes toward people. Then there are our attitudes about our “rights,” recognition, and even our walk with God. Some characteristics of how pride shows up can be shocking and convicting.
Conviction is good! It’s the Holy Spirit pointing out something that is out of alignment with God’s Will for us. God is good, and He only wants what is good for us. The conviction that exposes a prideful heart leads us to humility. It’s the broken heart that only God can heal.
My transformed life after a “nervous breakdown” is evidence of a healed, prideful heart. Don’t get me wrong, I am not perfect and far from humble, but I know when I fall back into that prideful trap. Especially when my “rights” take over. They are such an obstacle for me. I love what this quote from The Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous says about rights:
EXPECTATIONS
“My serenity is inversely proportional to my expectations. The higher my expectations of other people are, the lower is my serenity. I can watch my serenity level rise when I discard my expectations. But then my ‘rights’ try to move in, and they, too, can force my serenity level down. I have to discard my ‘rights,’ as well as my expectations, by asking myself, how important is it, really? How important is it compared to my serenity, my emotional sobriety? And when I place more value on my serenity and sobriety than on anything else, I can maintain them at a higher level – at least for the time being.”

I was a mess before I finally searched my heart, and God helped me uncover all that pride. I was trying to control everyone’s life because I thought people had to do things my way. That was my way of avoiding hurt. I tried playing God. It’s exhausting to try to be God because I am not capable.
